Hello San Diego!

Friday and Saturday, Balboa Park December Nights is happening, chock full of performances, open museums, arts, crafts, food, and innumerable vendors selling all manners of crafts and other fun stuff.

1222 Oceanfront: A Black Family Christmashas returned to the New Village Arts Theatre inCarlsbad. Performances will continue until December 20.

Friday (today), the Marché de Noël European-style Winter Fair will take place at the San Diego French-American School. Author Andrea Beatriz Arango, who wrote the One Book One San Diego teen selection Iveliz Explains It All, will talk and read at the Vista Library. At MiraCosta College, they will screen the classic award-winning Polish film Ida. The Mariachi opera El Milagro del Recuerdo will be performed at the San Diego Civic Theatre with a repeat performance that Sunday. Enjambre will perform at the Observatory in North Park. And Honor Norteño will perform at the Sierra Madre Cantina in Escondido.

Saturday, and for two shows next Sunday, Evolution Dance Center's The Nutcracker will be performed at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

Saturday, there will be a Sashiko & Kantha Embroidery Workshop at the San Diego Craft Collective in Liberty Station. At the Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside, the Tierra Caliente Academy of Arts will present a Spanish-language performance of La Pastorela (The Shepherds' Play). Ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro is performing at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. At UCSD, Epstein Family Amphitheater, Nochebuena: A Christmas Spectacular will be a celebration of the traditions and customs of Christmas in Mexico.

Sunday, the San Diego Buddhist Temple will host a Sri Lankan Food Festival.

Monday, at the Califorinia Center for the Arts in Escondido, there will be an opening ceremony for a series of presentations on the Sacred Arts of Tibet. Presentations will continue through December 9th. At the Carlsbad City Library, UCSD's Dr. Zollman will use portraits and sculpture as springboards for discussion of the meaning, purpose, challenges, and benefits of freedom in American Jewish life. The San Diego World Affairs Council will present a talk by Dr. Javier Mejia who will discuss Colombia: A Land of Beauty & Symbol of Magical Realism: A Balancing Act Between Macroeconomic Stability and Political Violence. The SDSU Gamelan Ensemble will perform at Smith Recital Hall at SDSU.

Tuesday, the classic film Victims of Sin will be screened at the Digial Gym. At the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, the show Irish Christmas in America will be performed.

Wednesday, the Second Annual Celebration of Cultures at the new Epstein Family Amphitheater will celebrate the diverse cultures and employees of UC San Diego. The Other Son will be screened at the Coronado Library.

Next Thursday, at UCSD Professor Suk-Young Kim, (UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television) and Professor B.G. Muhn (Georgetown University, Department of Art and Art History) will discuss their work on North Korean Culture. At UCSD's Park and Market, Slavic Soul Party: Balkan Brass Beats & Beyond will be a concert of Balkan folk music. Warwicks, will host Douglas Preston as he discusses and signs his new book, The Lost Tomb: And Other Real-Life Stories of Bones, Burials, and Murder. The Italian Film Festival will screen the film Beata Te (Blessed) at La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. Yemeni-American comedian Ahmed Al-Kadri will perform at Mic Drop Comedy. Chinese-American comedian Leslie Liao will perform at The American Comedy Company. There will be an end-of-the-semester performance of the USD Gamelan Ensemble at the school's Studio Theater.

Next Friday, the 65th Annual Las Posadas will be celebrated in Old Town.

Next Saturdy, the Klezmatics will perform at the UCSD Epstein Family Amphitheater. At the Nara Ultra Lounge, there will be a Kenya & Tanzania Independence Party.

Next Sunday, Trinidad-born trumpeter-percussionist-composer Etienne Charles will present his Creole Christmas show at the Scripps Research Auditorium.
